I recently had a long conversation with a patient of mine about a few issues that will raise their ugly heads during the upcoming presidential election. It reminded me that our battle is not against eachother, the battle goes much deeper than that.
He took a rather complacent view on the issue of gay rights (currently being presented as same sex marriages) saying, “What does it matter if two people want to live together? Get over it.” He did the same on abortion (a woman’s right to choose), environmental issues (global warming), medical marijuana, and others.
And he was especially disturbed over those who take the more conservative view against any of the above. How simple.
These issues are in fact, not much different than any other issues that have been the center of political debate since the beginning of time. They represent opposing views on matters that God has spoken clearly about throughout scripture.
As a Christian, I lack the freedom to question God’s wisdom in such a way. Do I know all the consequences of passing legislature in favor of homosexuality or legalizing marijuana? No. But I do know that the battle isn’t against my patient, neighbor, or those who choose to practice any of the above.
Eph 6:10-12 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.Â
Satan has been effective in his battle to make man think that God doesn’t exist or if He does exist, that His opinions are non-contemporary and do not matter. Satan has been very effective indeed.
