It’s official. My blog has now extended ‘to the ends of the earth.” Last night I had the privilege of teaching at the Union Gospel Mission in Yakima, Washington. For those of you unaware of the mission, it serves the homeless people in our community with meals, a place to sleep, spiritual help, and much more. That’s where I come in.
Our church has agreed to minister to them once a month and I volunteered to do my share. It’s not the teaching so much as the opportunity to meet and fellowship with the men afterwards that is most important–at least I think so. It is very rewarding to personally reach out and touch someone who needs a pat of encouragement on the back. Most of the audience is around my age and gender so it’s like a men’s club–without the pool, of course.
I was especially rewarded last evening when I had the pleasure of visiting with two men who approached me after the sermon to say that they had read my letter to the editor, recognized that it was me who had spoken to them at the mission before, and had now viewed the blog.
Remarkable! I never would have guessed the extent of the web and newspaper communication among these homeless people. It was a real pleasure sharing their ideas and comments. I’ll see you next month.
