Today is St. Patrick’s Day. Big Deal. Everyone is supposed to be wearing green or risk getting pinched for not. I choose to go back in time to the once honored but now forgotten tradition of wearing orange. Although I am not doing that either because I don’t own anything orange.
The real story is that the Catholics wear green in remembrance of St. Patrick, the Catholic missionary to Ireland who was actually British. Those of us that consider ourselves Protestants should be wearing orange in honor of Prince William of Orange, the protestant who defeated King James II a catholic.
In this day and age, many forget history or never really learn it, so very important issues like what color to wear on St. Patrick’s day falls into oblivion.
So all you protestants, get out your orange and wear it with pride. Martin Luther (not Martin Luther King Jr.–another history lesson for some other day) would be proud of you.
