IÂ attended a meeting in Chicago this past weekend. It was designed for physicians who are wanting to get out of caring for patients in the hospital or office and enter into fields that will still utilize our degrees in medicine–doing something else.
I am not personally looking to change the course of my own career just yet, but I wanted to explore my options as I approach that retirement age in the next ten years or so. And I was shocked!
The meeting was packed by physicians from all over the United States and from every medical discipline, especially those that care for patients in the physician’s office like Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Pediatrics.
And the overwhelming census was a desire to leave the field before any more of the Accountability Care Act (Obamacare) gets implemented. Everyone is refusing to practice medicine under the terms of the impending threat of increasing governmental regulation and intimidation.
And unfortunately for the patients, there were literally thousands of opportunities available. Everyone there could be quickly employed making as much money or more than they are currently making in the office. And apparently, the increasing government control and threats are leading physicians there in droves.
Does anybody care that this is happening right under our very noses as lawyers and politicians destroy through regulation what used to be the finest healthcare system in the world? Congratulations Mr. Obama.
