I recently heard a black “pastor” give his support for President Obama and his re-election in spite of the president’s support for same-sex marriages. Pathetic. He said that everyone’s personal freedom (homosexuals included) was more important than any other Christian tenet that Christ taught (paraphrasing). Simply put, that’s bullshit.
As Christians, something this man was obviously not, we do not have the choice of choosing to ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ in favor of our personal soap boxes. That includes those who love to take advantage of their ancestor’s misfortunes, even when they haven’t personally suffered from slavery for even one brief moment in time.
As an American, little is more important to me than my personal freedoms. They have been fought and paid for even by members of my own family through many wars. BUT, the teachings of Jesus Christ far exceed my personal freedoms in importance. As the Ten Commandments begin, “Thou shall have no other Gods before me.”
Jesus didn’t even teach slaves to rebel to gain their freedoms. Instead, he encouraged them to serve their masters faithfully as His personal representatives.
Eph 6:5-7 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.
Col 3:22-24 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Titus 2:9-10Â Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
1 Peter 2:18-19 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.
I wonder if this pastor would still support personal freedom over the Christian tenet of “Love your neighbor as yourself.” if those people chose to use their freedom to wear a white hood rather than practicing homosexuality?
