The use of marijuana as a medicinal supplement seems to be at the forefront of the daily news again. Every once in a while it rises to the top and shows its ugly head like the Loch Ness monster. What is really going on here?
Those who want the legalization of marijuana are no more interested in using it for true medicinal purposes than I am interested in prescribing it for them. The picture usually presented to the voting public is of some guy dying from cancer that needs to smoke marijuana to relieve himself from agonizing pain. This couldn’t be further from the truth in the far majority of cases.
Every patient that has asked me for medical marijuana has been someone that you wouldn’t let baby sit your own children. Not one of them has ever been diagnosed with a chronic disease let alone cancer. And none of them present in any pain clinically severe enough to merit a prescription stronger than aspirin.
This is a ploy to legalize a dangerous drug so that those who have chosen to toke their lives away will feel justified in doing so. It is nothing more than that. Smoking damages the lungs whether it is a cigar, a cigarette, or a Tiparillo, as they used to say.  The active ingredient of marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and it has been legally prescribed for years in a pill form. How come no one seems to want that?
