There is a joke that I learned as a younger man that was alluded to in a more serious light when President Obama ran for office in 2008. It goes like this: What do you call a person who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call a person who speaks one language? American!!!
Yes, we Americans are often mocked for our seeming arrogance in not really caring about whether we fit into the rest of the world or not. We are rebels by nature according to “them” but I would rather see it as independent. Independence is at the very core of our initial fight for separation from tyranny and the writing of our Declaration of Independence that made us a free and separate power way back in the 1700s.
I was reminded of that independence recently when I perused an article that stated “…and federal law mandates that physicians who accept patients with federal payers (medicare and medicaid) must provide language translation to all of their patients who require it.” Â
That means that the federal government expects you and me as American citizens to step up and pay the bill for interpretation services out of our own pockets for those immigrants that don’t speak English here in our beloved country. That’s bullshit. For you non-English speaking immigrants, that can be translated, “You can go find some other doctor because I’m sure not going to pay for it.” Â
When Medicaid only pays me $34 and Medicare only pays $52 on a $117 office charge, there is no money to pay for such nonsense? Once again, the government guarantees that people who are sick may be denied access to the very medical care they need.
