Sorry that I was gone for a few days. My blog was down and I have just completed one of my civic responsibilities for the year by serving on jury duty. This is something that most of us don’t enjoy and I would admit the same. It isn’t the thought of assuring that someone gets a fair trial by a jury of their peers that’s a bother, it’s the parking.
This was a case that involved charges for a DUI (Driving while under the influence). I was not eventually chosen for the case so I am not aware of the details. But I was entertained a bit by the jury selection process. It’s especially humorous to listen to the sad stories of why someone feels they shouldn’t serve.
A few of these sounded legitimate, but only a few. One young mother started histerically crying because she had received a call from the school that her child was sick. They said “sick” Â not dying but you would think that her child had been airlifted to Harborview. I would have sequestered her cell phone and researched that one a bit before dismissing her but I wasn’t the judge, fortunately for her. A great show, none the less.
I also couldn’t believe the extent that alcoholism had pervaded the jury pool. When the judge asked whether anyone was an alcoholic personally or had a member of their family with the same problem, the jury pool fell to zero. Alcoholism had touched everyone in the room. So much for legalizing marijuana.
Well, back to work. I hope none of you experience the effects of alcoholism. There are too many families destroyed from within and without. There are damaged marriages, lost hopes, and unfortunate deaths. Dont drink and drive.
