Coach Paul Wulff was fired yesterday as the head football coach of my alma mater, Washington State University. It was a decision that literally hurt my gut when I heard about it. The powers that be never asked for my opinion, believe it or not. After four years, his record was dismal at 9 wins, 40 losses.
But I was for keeping him through the fifth and final year of his original contract. I liked what I saw when he dismissed thugs from the team. I liked what I saw when we were getting killed on the field but kept fighting back. I liked what I saw as the team progressed year to year, although I must admit, they progressed very slowly.
But I also must admit that I know absolutely nothing about football management. I was on the field at Martin stadium when WSU was losing to the University of Idaho. Mike Price was the current coach and I let everyone know that this guy had to go. If you can’t beat Idaho, you shouldn’t be coaching in the PAC-10- now 12!
No one listened to me and Mike Price went on to become the winningest coach in WSU history. He took the Cougars to more bowl games and Rose Bowls than anyone, ever. So much for my football wisdom. So goodbye Paul Wulff. I was pulling for you all the way but perhaps those who know football are making the best decision of all by not listening to me.
