Most people are not aware that Medicare will actually pay for diabetic patients to receive special shoes. These shoes are “specially made” in an attempt to prevent diabetics from suffering foot ulcers that may eventually lead them to severe infections and loss of limb. They lose the feeling in their extremities sooner than most people, especially if they fail to care for their diabetes properly.
That may sound noble of our government (remember we citizens pay the bill for this as increased taxes) and perhaps it is. Unfortunately, where does this line of thinking stop? Why are we not supplying all diabetic supplies to prevent diabetics from having poor control of their disease in the first place?  Why are we not monitoring every bite they eat to be sure that they are not eating diets heavy in carbohydrates or simple sugars? Why are we not picking them up from their houses every day and making sure they are exercising as recommended.
Today I received a notice from one of the local suppliers of these shoes that stated Medicare now “requires the chart notes (medical records) of the patient” Â before these shoes will be supplied. It used to just require my simple signature verifying that I care for the patient for diabetes.
We didn’t see that coming did we? Now your medical record will be in the hands of the federal government without your approval. That means they will see the physician’s statement about your diabetes ANDÂ your complaint of erectile dysfunction or vaginal discharge included in the same office visit.
Wouldn’t it be better if the citizens of this great country saw a need and gave out of the abundance of their hearts to these very same causes instead of allowing the government to usurp your right of privacy? Can’t be done? Why do you think we have long established institutions called Salvation Army, St. Josephs, Shriners, Sister’s of Providence, United Way, Rotary, Lion’s Club, etc…
