None of us really know everything that we need to know to make a proper evaluation of what’s happening at Penn State University. And if we did, we could still probably debate the current issues that have led to the firing of numerous people involved. Frankly, it’s an obvious mess.
I do wonder however, whether Penn State hasn’t gone and thrown the baby out with the bath water, so to speak. And all this in an effort to avoid even more embarrassment than the university has already suffered.
I used to be the chairman of the board of the local Crisis Pregnancy Center. It is now known as “Life Choices.” Those of us who ministered to young women who were deciding what to do with their unplanned pregnancy, were aware of issues that many of you on the outside were not.
For example, most women do NOT want to abort their unborn child. But they find themselves under significant pressure to do so. This pressure usually comes from the father of the baby who doesn’t want to accept responsiblity for the child he has created, or the mother of the pregnant woman who doesn’t want any shame coming to the family.
Dosen’t that sound exactly like Penn State? In an effort to avoid further embarrassment from the press, they have just elected to abort the whole coaching staff and half the administration. And, just like the abortion issue, they are probably making the wrong choice because they are not making the decision for the right reasons.
Time will tell as this finally plays out over the next few weeks.
